More coming soon - I've got lots that will probably be helpful, particularly the more esoteric information on vintage gear, but they require sorting out and validating.

Recording

For general advice about recording, there are several excellent resources on line.

For beginners, the first is Tweak's Guide. This walks you through almost all aspects of project studio recording, the mysteries of MIDI, DAWs, analog recording, outboard equipment and component choices. It's not specific to any particular platform, as the advice is more general, but it's well worth reading ALL of it if you're just getting started. It's entertaining too.

For more advanced advice, the technical articles at Sound on Sound are excellent. If you don't subscribe to the magazine (you should!) you might have to pay a modest fee for the newest articles, but earlier articles are free.

For users Logic, ProTools, Reason, Live, FCP and others, try MacProVideo. Downloadable video tutorials, reasonably priced, very good.

For forums with a lot of information about Logic, try these:

Apple Discussions. I hang out here sometimes.

Logic Pro Help Probably the best forum, but for some reason I rarely participate.

Big Blue Lounge (also for ProTools, Nuendo, Reason and Digital Performer).

Logic Users Group

Some good free Logic video tutorials from and SFLogic Ninja and Makemorenoise.

Sound on Sound Excellent forum for Logic and many other platforms, and also good forums for mastering, general recording advice, studio design and acoustics, music business advice etc.

Some FAQs are often about mastering and dithering. The following links go to Izotope and the guides refer to their products, but they contain good information for anyone needing some well-written explanations.

More dynamics processing: this one is a good five page primer from Rane's tech notes.

Cables. Sounds boring, I know, but here's what you need to know about interconnection, wiring, balanced .v. unbalanced etc.

Good blog for general recording hints from Kim Lajoie

Microphones Listings of many mics and their specs.

Good resource for analog stuff - tracking down parts and accessories. Bay Area Studio Engineering

Tape Machines

Analogue Tape Machines. Lots of info here, including a source for calibration tapes.

Need tape? ATR is in production for 1/4" - 2" tape.

All things Studer can be found here, including technical info, mods, parts source etc.

Entertainment

Pandora lets you set up your own multiple streaming radio stations based on your ratings of various songs it plays for you. You can create different stations for different genres or moods. Uncanny - once you've marked some songs 'like it' or 'don't like it' it works very well. I'm hearing lots of interesting music.

If you need a reason not to work for a while, visit here. Write a song! Produce online!

Music Business

Great article on piracy and the role of the internet here, from the Suicide Girls site.

If you want to read more about the state of the music business, go to Bob Lefsetz' site, and subscribe to his Lefsetz Letter.
